So apparently the sleeper at Comic-Con was Matthew Vaughn’s adaptation of Mark Millar’s comic KICK ASS, which had just begun it’s run when the film was optioned. Through some weird collaboration, the two parties were able to create an ultra-violent world where all those comic book fantasies have very real-life consequences. While not a fan of the slow paced comic, the film is an incredible surprise. This is not Stardust; it might not even be Layer Cake. The clips below are remarkably intense, and the film’s dark humor and unwillingness to play by the rules is a breath of fresh air. And dare I say, this is the best role Nicolas Cage has played in years — YEARS! He’s having so much fun, how can you seriously expect the audience not to? Check out the clips. Great stuff.
AWESOME YES?! Chloe Moretz is about to become everyone’s favorite badass, so it’s a shame this isn’t coming out this Winter or Spring; a December 2010 release date seems kind of odd for a film like this. Kick Ass is directed by Matthew Vaughn from a script by Vaughn and Jane Goldman (Stardust). It stars Aaron Johnson as Kick Ass, Nicolas Cage as Big Daddy, Chloe Moretz as Hit Girl, Mark Strong as Frank D’Amico, and Christopher Mintz-Plasse as Red Mist.

In an interview with SciFi Wire, Mark Millar talked about his involvement in Matthew Vaughn’s adaptation of his comic, Kick Ass. He let slip that Kick Ass 2 is already being plotted out. “We’re planning it, because all the actors are quite young and we have to make it relatively quickly. So we’ll definitely do that inside the next 18 to 24 months.”
Kick-Ass follows Dave Lizewski, a Manhattan high schooler who moonlights as a costumed superhero. The comic is ultra-violent and laced with foul language. Millar and Vaughn promise that the film maintains the tone. The film stars Aaron Johnson as Dave; Chloe Moretz as an even younger assassin, Hit Girl; and Nicolas Cage as her father, Big Daddy.

This trailer debuted last week, but I’m really too lazy to say anything about it. It just looks bad. Not Ghost Rider bad. Like, Wicker Man bad. Werner Herzog’s sequel to Abel Ferrera’s 1992 crime drama isn’t a remake or a reboot of the original. “It only has a corrupt cop as the central character and that’s about it.” At the 2009 Academy Awards, he claimed to have never seen the original. So then why call it Bad Lieutenant: Port Of Call New Orleans? Why not just call it Port Of Call New Orleans and have it be about a corrupt cop? Work with me, Hollywood.
Well, that’s because Herzog and the film’s star think the film has franchise potential. “You could have more than one Bad Lieutenant,” Cage says. “You could have Bad Lieutenant: Port Of Call London next. It could happen and that’s what makes it interesting. I’m not the same cop that Harvey Keitel was. I’m a different cop. I’m a New Orleans cop.”
Here’s the trailer.
Bad Lieutenant: Port Of Call New Orleans stars Nicolas Cage, Eva Mendes, Val Kilmer, Xzibit, Fairuza Balk, Jennifer Coolidge, Vondie Curtis Hall, Shawn Hatosy, and Brad Dourif.
