Aronofsky and Portman Eye ‘Black Swan’

Darren Aronofsky is currently eyeing a supernatural thriller set in the world of New York City ballet with Natalie Portman in the leading role. Black Swan has been revived after being put into turnaround by Universal in 1997. The script has been making the rounds to studios and specialty divisions, several of which are keenly interested. Mark Heyman, development exec at Aronofsky’s Protozoa Pictures, has done a rewrite of John McLaughlin’s original script.
Aronofsky, coming off the success of the Mickey Rourke-led drama The Wrestler, is in high demand right now. He hasn’t chosen a follow-up project yet, but he was recently in pre-production for a reboot of the Robocop franchise. Though, it seems that Swan is more likely to lens first.
Story centers on a veteran ballerina (Portman) who finds herself locked in a competitive situation with a rival dancer, with the stakes and twists increasing as the dancers approach a big performance. But it’s unclear whether the rival is a supernatural apparition or if the protagonist is simply having delusions. People who’ve read the script compared it to Nicole Kidman’s The Others in which viewers are left to discern what’s real and what’s imagined. The film could begin shooting as early as this year.
